Medical billing companies vary widely in how they staff accounts, report results, and handle sensitive data. The right questions help you compare them on substance rather than on promises.
Questions about process
- Who will work on my account day to day, and who is my escalation contact?
- What does a typical week look like for my billing team?
- How do you handle denials, appeals, and timely filing deadlines?
- Which systems do you integrate with, and what access do you need?
- How do you train staff on payer rule changes?
Questions about reporting and control
- What reports will I receive, and how often?
- Which metrics do you track for my practice, and how do we agree on a baseline?
- How can I see the work done on my account at any time?
- How are fees structured, and what is included or excluded?
Questions about data and compliance
- Will you sign a business associate agreement, and how do you protect protected health information?
- How is access granted, reviewed, and removed for staff who leave?
- How do you handle a security incident or a payer audit?
A good partner answers these questions directly and in writing. Vague answers are a signal to keep looking.
